Did you hear about Greta Friedman Dying? My mother has mentioned this picture many times. She's said " I'll never forget that day! People were in their homes, stores and streets hugging, kissing and rejoicing with people they knew and didn't know!"  "The Kiss" is a photograph that portrays a U.S. Navy sailor grabbing and kissing a woman in a white dress on Victory over Japan Day in New York City's Times Square on September 2, 1945. It became an iconic picture symbolizing the end of World War II and  Momma remembers seeing it in newspapers as it spread across the nation.  The woman in the white dress was Greta Friedman and she died this past week at 92 years old.  Who she was and who he was stayed a mystery for many years. They were not and never became romantically involved, but the mystery of who they were and why he did it did get solved! Read these articles. They tell all about it! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2187071/Times-...

Those Good ol days

Ever think you were born in the wrong century?  That's how I feel when I watch the Road To Avonlea. There was no confusion about what a woman was and what a man was, like there is now. Families ate together and talked to each other.  Farming was respected and farmers were respected leaders in a community. Statesmen were expected to be honest and represent those they served. Everybody in a large family were important.  Everybody mattered. Children grew up, adults grew old and everybody still mattered! Road to Avonlea: Season 1

I CANNOT STOP!

My dear friend, Mary is right on!  Here’s what she posted a couple of years ago: When I was a young child, I wanted to be older. I went to school where there were multiple classes in one room. I loved that because I could do my work and then listen to the other classes being taught to the older students. I loved learning. When I was 5, I wanted to be 6. When I was a teenager, I couldn’t wait to drive. Then I couldn’t wait until I graduated. Then I couldn’t wait to get married….you get the picture. Now that I’m 63, I’ve accomplished many of my dreams, simple as they were. I’ve married, had my babies, watched my children grow up, probably with some of the same dreams. I’ve watched my grandsons grow up and most likely will see great grand children before I depart this world. I guess what got me on this train of thought was a visit from a dear, old friend today. I’ve known him since I was 18 and he’s considerably older than me. I wonder what his dreams were as a child. Probably some...

The Chinese Piano House

Image
A friend posted a picture of this house on facebook because it reminded her of another friend, Kathy.  I understand why: Kathy’s family are all  extremely gifted in music – singing and playing instruments; they can play an array of instruments and sing an array of melody and harmony parts and Kathy has the know how to advise on sound settings in concert situations.  Sweet Kathy is the specialist in keeping the “harmony” in the family, I believe.  We’ve shared some very special times together and they’ve had a significant part in encouraging my son on his road to becoming the successful musician he is today.  As only true friends can do, they have also stood by our family through some very grave experiences in our lives and they will always be very dear to us. “the most romantic building in China”. Anyway, I wanted to know more about  The Piano House. Here’s what I’ve learned: It is in Huainan, Anhu...

Pink Rosebuds

"What is your favorite flower?"  asked the young man to the young lady who was taking his heart, one moment, one hour, one day at a time. However, life had knocked her around quite a bit in the most recent years and choosing a favorite flower had certainly NOT been on her mind! But, somewhere inside, she knew and gave her answer...it was the rose.  But she did not know why. Was it because they burst fourth, soft and beautiful, on a bush filled with thorns?  Was it because their aroma could permeate the area around them, no matter the poverty and squaller that might be there?  Or was it because they still stretched their beautiful petals upward, even in drought and bright, hot sunshine?  Or was it just that she was captivated by their beauty, array of colors and various arrangements of petals that make the rose such a versatile plant to include in bouquets expressing one's love or condolence?  Or, had she read the legend of the rose in which a young man r...

If I could choose a moment

Image
Sometimes, moments are so precious, sweet, perfect, fun, fantastic, impressive, astonishing or awesome we feel like we'd like to stay in them forever. The other day I thought, " If I could have chosen a moment to stay in for the rest of this life, which one would it be?"                                            Perhaps it would have been the first time my mother held me securely in her arms, in her warm and gentle way, and I looked into her soft brown eyes for the very first time on my birth day, but then I would have missed ......when she let me scrape the bowl of her delicious lemon pie, the taste of strawberries right off the vine at Mr Kamper's , a "poor" old man Momma made pies for because no one else cared enough to make him one...
