On Valentine's Day

Today my devotion gave this illustration:  on valentine's day a certain coffee shop gave each lady that came in a lovely red carnation.  Also on this day a young lady received a dozen red roses form her sweetheart who was a military pilot stationed on a carrier in the Mediterranean.  It concluded with the question " Who do you suppose treasured their valentine's gift the most?'  Of course the sweetheart.  The author proceeded to say even if the type flower were switched the outcome would have been the same. because "its the thought that counts"
Anyone but me think this author missed her own point?  It wasn't the thought that counted - it was the relationship!
